I don’t often find a product that lives up to the hype, even less a product that far exceeds my expectations. But this week I had a chance to test-drive a pair of sunglasses that set a new standard for me.
I have blue eyes and am sensitive to bright light. That’s a bit of a challenge during my commute everyday. I also train outside just about everyday for about an hour. I use sunglasses a lot and I have about a dozen pairs of sunglasses right now. Yeah, I’m a bit obsessed about finding the right sunglasses for my activities.
When I think of Maui Jim I think of Jimmy Buffet cruising Hawaii in flip flops. My dad wears Maui Jim and I thought of them as the old guy sunglasses. I was really surprised when I used Maui Jim’s Kapana sunglasses this week. They truly are the best sunglasses I have ever used. And from a brand that I never really considered before. Maybe dad has more wisdom to share.
The lenses are simply amazing. I literally felt my eyes relax on my commute. By the time I arrived at work my eyes felt refreshed, as if I had just had a long nap. The lenses are polarized and filter out glare. Aside from fishing, a very practical benefit to polarized lenses is seeing through a dirty windshield while driving into the sun. The lenses also enhance color and contrast, which sounds like a description of an HDTV feature, but the combination of glare reduction, and color enhancements really make it comfortable on the eye.
The frames are very high quality, made of a combination of nickel, silver and zinc. The double-hinged temple bars are a nice touch that adds to durability. The nose pads are adjustable to fit your face, but they fit me perfectly straight out of the box. Maui Jim has a variety of glasses to fit a range of face and nose shapes.
Maui Jim also makes a great line of sunglasses for sports. There are some extremely lightweight models designed for really active activities. I will definitely have these on the top of my list for the next pair of sunglasses for training.
If you are in the market for a really good pair of sunglasses, then you owe it to yourself to head down to your nearest Sunglass Hut to check these out. The price tag is a bit higher than the Oakley sunglasses that I have typically been using, but worth every penny.
