Incredible. Amazing. Surreal. Seeing The Masters in HD is great. Seeing The Masters in 3D changes not only how we watch golf on TV, but also how we watch all sports on TV. Tournament play has been remarkably entertaining. The weather has cooperated and the field has risen to the occasion. This is possibly the best Masters tournament of all time. 3D skeptics will instantly become evangelists for 3D when they see sports. All of a sudden it does not matter if glasses are needed. It does not matter It is well worth the minor in inconvenience for the ultimate experience. They hype is being proved to be true.
No one expects to watch everything in 3D, it doesn’t make sense to watch the news or Seinfeld reruns in 3D. But it will be great for s0me special events. ESPN has a huge roster of 3D events planned.
Golfers are always looking for an edge for the game. Golfers buy latest gadget that may take a stroke off their game. 3D is the gadget that will instantly make watching golf on TV immediately more enjoyable. The only way to get a better view is to be the pro playing The Masters.
The views of the course are simply breathtaking. Augusta is the premiere location and event for golf, and the 3D broadcast finally does it justice. The shots through the trees to the greens go from beautiful in HD to surreal in 3D. You really get the sense of how narrow the fairways are and how imposing the trees are from the tee box. You can really see the undulations in the greens too. Golf does not get any better than this without being on the course.
By the way, an old timer in the clubhouse today told me that Tiger is a bum and that he needs to shut up and golf. Plus, if Phil Mickelson wins he gets his new driver for free (“Win With Phil” Free Callaway Drivers Contest).
There are still a few kinks to work out in the 3D broadcasts. The picture is a little soft and the color is a bit saturated, but the potential is starting to be realized.
Golf fans are just the first to enjoy the superlative experience. Imagine football in 3D. The helmet cam would give us the QB experience from the comfort of the man cave. Even better: can you imagine how scary NASCAR wipeouts will be in 3D?
3D is the next really big thing for TV. Just remember there is still a real world out there and you need to leave the cave occasionally to visit reality. But if you can’t make it to Augusta, at least you can feel like you have been there. Go Phil!

Z1 guy: we learned about the 3D broadcast from Direct TV’s web site: http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/content/hd/3d?footernavtype=-1. The site shows some of the upcoming 3D broadcast schedule. ESPN also has a 3D broadcast listing: http://espn.go.com/3d/schedule.html. There have been some really great 3D broadcasts: World Cup, MLB All Star Game and XGames. Check them out!
