This will be one of the most watched golf events ever for many reasons. It is the intersection of arguably the Major Major, absolutely one of the most beautiful golf courses ever, and golf’s 3D debut in HD. But even more importantly, this is forgiveness day. Everyone who has even the slightest interest in golf or tabloids will watch as golf’s greatest will come crawling back on one of the stages in the sport. For one of the very few times in his career no one really expects Tiger to play well. But if anyone can, it is the robot.
And golf needs Tiger playing his role and his best. His behavior has cost the sport, broadcasters and golf manufacturers millions. When Tiger takes the week off, ratings end up in the sand trap. I work with the PGA TOUR and golf manufacturers, and they all agree that Tiger brings so much to the game. We don’t have to be a fan of his personal life to respect what he brings to the game. Role model? No. Heck of a golfer? Yes.
There is no way to miss the hype around 3D and now broadcasters are starting to deliver on the dream of 3D. Comcast has announced that it will broadcast the Masters Tournament in 3D for two hours a day. This is not the lame anaglyph 3D you saw at the Super Bowl, no red and green paper glasses. The next gen 3D is much more like the 3D that is in theaters right now. Samsung and Panasonic both launched their newest 3D TVs over the last couple of weeks. These TVs use stereoscopic 3D, which is a much higher quality 3D.
You will also be able to play the live 3D stream at www.masters.com on your PC, using a 3D media player, 3D monitor and 3D glasses.
I can only imagine looking down the narrow, winding fairways or across the bridge on 12. Seeing through the trees, the sand exploding out of a bunker, and the fly-overs will literally take on a new dimension. This will be one of those historical moments for TV: Tiger’s return and the debut of 3D sports. This will be a great day for the man cave.
The Masters kicks off a new season of sports in 3D. ESPN is slated to launch a channel dedicated to 3D events, starting with the World Cup in June. This will be one of those days for early adopter cave men get to show off the gear. The guys will be in awe, and for good reason.
